Shared Values — a cause and an action.
Riverkeeper, Inc.
Mission: Riverkeeper is a member-supported watchdog organization dedicated to defending the Hudson River and its tributaries and protecting the drinking water supply of nine million New York City and Hudson Valley residents.
About: Riverkeeper was founded nearly 50 years ago by a group of fisherman and concerned citizens who were determined to reclaim the exploited Hudson River from polluters. Since then, we have grown to become the river's most visible and effective advocate, while expanding our mission to protect invaluable freshwater reservoirs. Riverkeeper performs scientific research, enforces environmental laws, advocates for strong protective legislation and organizes grassroots activists, all in our quest to protect these water resources and the people who love and depend on them.
Riverkeeper works to restore the Hudson River, with the goal of ensuring that the full length is safe for fishing and swimming, and the river's biological diversity and abundance is returned. We have made pollution investigation and resolution a core element of this work. We also proactively advocate for stronger regulations and policies on a range of issues such as stormwater management, fisheries management, and wastewater treatment infrastructure. Our patrol boat is the only independent, citizen supported vessel actively monitoring the River. As such, the issues we document and the cases we bring are unique among environmental organizations. Riverkeeper is the inspiration and model for 270 "keeper" groups worldwide.
